Profile
John is a Partner with the firm and the leader of the Commerce Act practice. John's practice includes prosecution of serious crime, Fair Trading and competition matters, regulatory advice and judicial review.
Following university, John worked for another major New Zealand law firm, practising civil litigation. In 1993 John left New Zealand to study in the United States and in 1994 he graduated with an LLM from the University of Chicago. He then worked for six years for Sullivan and Cromwell, a major US law firm.
His practice there included competition, securities and insurance litigation, and advice regarding criminal and regulatory investigations by, among others, the Department of Justice, SEC, New York Stock Exchange and NASD.
In 2000 John joined the Kings County District Attorney's Office in New York, where he prosecuted felony jury trials and conducted investigations into, among other things, fraud and corruption. In the course of his three years as a prosecutor there, John was assigned responsibility for major white collar fraud investigations, including securities and antitrust investigations and prosecutions, often working in conjunction with federal authorities.
Upon his return to New Zealand in 2004, John joined Meredith Connell and has since conducted numerous jury trials in the High Court and District Court. In addition, he has had significant involvement in several major Fair Trading Act prosecutions, as well as providing advice to the Commerce Commission on anti-competitive conduct and the Ministry of Economic Development on the petroleum and minerals regime.
