Background
Philip completed his Arts degree majoring in psychology at Auckland University; where his Law degrees were also completed.

After 2 years experience in Auckland Philip worked for almost 4 years in a large Brisbane law firm before returning home.

He joined Meredith Connell in 1988 and was made a partner in 1992.

Before moving to MC, Philip spent most of his first 7 years of practice in civil litigation.

Experience
Whilst in practice in Australia in the mid 1980s Philip was involved in acting for the Medical Defence Union in defending and advising medical practitioners. His firm in Brisbane also acted for the Royal Brisbane Hospital and other related hospital boards. He was involved in giving advice to hospitals, in employment related hearings involving challenges to promotions and on an Hospital ethics committee.

Together with other health professionals he is involved in a committee which reviews child deaths (and serious physical assaults). For many years he has prosecuted crimes against children, particularly those of the sexual nature. As such, has been involved in consulting with medical practitioners of various specialties, including forensic medical examiners, mental health professionals (psychologists and psychiatrists) paediatricians, venereologists and physicians. He is a member of the Medico-Legal Society.

Has been a consultant to the doctors for sexual abuse care (DSAC) group for over 10 years and has presented numerous seminars and advised that group on medico-legal issues.

Philip is involved in conducting criminal trials in the High Court and District Courts in all areas of the law. He regularly appears in the Court of Appeal.

Another interest Philip has is in the growing area of computer crime. He is involved in various organisations concerned with Internet Safety and has prosecuted a number of such cases.
