Our strength in regulatory and commercial litigation is a particular feature of the firm and an area where we continue to build an outstanding reputation. The practice group is made up of eleven Partners, supported by a dedicated team of lawyers and support staff.

Clients of the group include almost all of the regulatory bodies in New Zealand, together with a number of private, commercial clients – all drawn by Meredith Connell’s wealth of experience, history and knowledge in the area – and our ability to attract and retain the best litigators in New Zealand.

With an in-depth knowledge of securities, company and insolvency law, the group regularly acts for the IRD, Financial Markets Authority, Companies Office, Official Assignee, and Serious Fraud Office. a well as private liquidators and receivers.

The group also acts for the Commerce Commission, prosecuting criminal cases and acting in substantial civil proceedings under the Commerce Act, the Fair Trading Act, and the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act.

Away from the regulatory/public litigation side, we also provide specialist top end commercial litigation advice and representation to private clients. Our commercial litigators are highly experienced in dealing with property and leasing disputes, contractual claims, debt recovery, equitable and tort actions and other enforcement processes – both in Court and within arbitration and mediation contexts.

In addition, the group has a specialist public law and medico-legal expertise, with our lawyers regularly appearing in judicial review actions for a variety of clients, as well as representing District Health Boards, the Ministry of Health, ACC and other health sector organizations.
