John Dixon

John is a Partner in the firm's General Litigation group and the leader of the Fair Trading and Commerce Act practice. He has expertise in the prosecution of serious crime, Fair Trading and competition matters, commercial litigation, regulatory advice, and judicial review.
Following university, John initially worked for another major New Zealand law firm, practising civil litigation. In 1993-94 he studied for his LLM at the University of Chicago. He then worked for six years at Sullivan and Cromwell, a leading US law firm. His practice there included competition, securities and insurance litigation, and defence of criminal and regulatory investigations and prosecutions by the Department of Justice, SEC, New York Stock Exchange, NASD, and the Federal Reserve. In 2000 John joined the District Attorney's Office, where he prosecuted felony jury trials and conducted investigations into, among other things, fraud and corruption. He was honoured by the National District Attorney's Association for his investigation and prosecution of a corrupt judge.
John joined Meredith Connell upon his return to New Zealand in 2004 and has since conducted numerous jury trials in the High Court and District Court, including leading for the Crown in prosecutions for murder, serious drug and sexual offending, and fraud.
In addition, he has acted for the Commerce Commission in a number of significant prosecutions and civil proceedings. He has also provided advice to MED on the petroleum and minerals regime. John is a member of the SFO panel of prosecutors.
